I have gained significant experience as a business mentor from serving over 400 organisations (big, medium and emerging) across 15 industries in Australia, the United Kingdom, Asia and the United States of America.
In 2009, I retired as a partner from the global consulting firm, Deloitte, to establish this Strategic Mentoring business. I aimed to get much closer to a few business owners and CEOs rather than drive significant projects and teams as I had done for the previous 20+ years around the world. Along the way, I founded a successful, 25 person start-up with two partners and offices up the eastern seaboard serving some of Australia’s largest distributed businesses. This taught me so much about the realities of business ownership!
But it all of this experience has taught me about the complexities of running and the constant battle of what to focus on: the urgent, the important, the long term vision, and sometimes survival.
It was this need to be able to have a clear vision, that north star, and to keep coming back to it as the filter for what needs to be done. We simply can’t do everything. We need to ruthlessly prioritise, what are those criticalfewactions™, that if we did nothing else, will help deliver our vision. A bit like bringing the attention back to the breath. That has been my focus for the last fifteen years.
